Frax 1550 vs microneedling for acne scars

The short answer

Frax 1550 and microneedling are both used for acne scars, but Frax 1550 is a laser that treats thousands of microscopic columns of skin, while microneedling uses fine needles. At our Stoney Creek studio in Hamilton we offer Frax 1550, from $200 per session, and Frax 1550 is typically four to five sessions about a month apart.

What are acne scars?

Acne scars involve the deeper layer of the skin, where collagen sits. Collagen is the protein that gives skin its structure.

Frax 1550 is used to prompt new collagen in that deeper layer.

The two treatments differ in how they are done.

How does Frax 1550 work?

Frax 1550 is a non-ablative fractional laser. Non-ablative means it does not remove the top layer of skin. Fractional means it treats thousands of microscopic columns of skin and leaves the skin between them intact.

This prompts new collagen, and results build over three to four months. You can read more on our Frax 1550 page.

We apply numbing cream first. Afterwards, skin is pink for a few days, then can feel rough or look slightly bronzed as it renews.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling uses a device with very fine needles.

We do not offer microneedling at our studio. If you are weighing it up, a provider who performs it can explain their approach and what it involves for your skin.

How do the two treatments differ?

The main differences come down to the method:

  • The method. Frax 1550 is a laser. Microneedling uses fine needles.
  • How Frax 1550 treats the skin. It treats thousands of microscopic columns and leaves the skin between them intact.
  • Recovery after Frax 1550. Pink for a few days, then rough or slightly bronzed as the skin renews. A provider who offers microneedling can explain its recovery.

Neither is right for everyone. The better choice depends on your scars, your skin and what you want from treatment.

Who does Frax 1550 tend to suit?

We use Frax 1550 for acne scarring. We check your skin at the consultation and confirm whether it's suitable.

It means planning for a few pink days after each session, then a rough or slightly bronzed stage as the skin renews.

If you still have active breakouts, we set the order of treatment at your consultation. You can read more on our Acne & congestion page.

Who does microneedling tend to suit?

Suitability depends on the provider, the device and your skin. A provider who offers it is the right person to assess you for it.

How many sessions do acne scars need?

With Frax 1550, treatment is typically four to five sessions about a month apart.

Results vary and build over three to four months, because new collagen takes time to form. You can see before and after photos on our results page.

What does Frax 1550 cost at our studio?

Frax 1550 for acne scars is from $200 per session, and full-face Frax 1550 for texture and pores is from $449. Every price is on our prices page.

Every treatment starts with the 30-minute one-on-one consultation. We look at your scars, explain what Frax 1550 can and cannot do for them, and tell you how many sessions you will need and the price.

We can also talk through your options, including treatments we do not offer. Read more on our Acne scars page.
